Featured Unipower GT of the Month Chassis 367.P1 1966 Prototype RHD Built in 1965, this is the original Prototype chassis that was used from which all subsequent Unipower GT's originated, albeit with some minor bodywork changes.

The Unipower GT is a British specialist sports car that debuted at the January 1966 Racing Car Show. It uses the powertrain from the BMC Mini mounted amidships. Production lasted until 1969. Wearing a low, sleek fiberglass body, the Unipower GT relied on mechanical parts from the Mini, including its powertrain, which was placed behind the passengers. This made the Unipower GT one of the earliest and most affordable mid-engine sports cars during that period.

Feel free to add any Jun 21, 2012 · Anyway we found the sketchiest yard in Fort Lauderdale and as my friend was signing the paperwork I went for a wander and found the guys personal stash of an early TVR (Tasmin, maybe?) that he'd fitted with a SBC, a Citroen SM and what I now know is a Unipower GT all sat next to each other decaying in the 40c+ heat and humidity.

This lovely little Unipower GT is the pride of enthusiast owner Gerry Hulford’s pristine collection, and he knows everything about it. We caught up with him and the diminutive car at a recent Harwoods track day on the Motor Circuit, where he was joined by Ernie Unger, the man responsible for the original drawings and idea behind the Unipower.

While cutting his teeth at Lotus in the Fifties, before working on the Imp project for Rootes, Unger had a vision of a mid-engined road car that was great to drive, light and affordable – to buy as well as to run. A nice movie about the Unipower GT has been published on a new You tube channel linked to motoring site Below the Radar.In it, respected motoring journalist and photographer Richard Dredge tells the tale of the car’s inception, design, manufacture and production demise. The car was based on BMC Mini mechanical components with the transverse engine and gearbox unit mounted in a mid-engine configuration. Combining light weight, a low centre of gravity and low Chic and quick, the Unipower GT is the best production special that appeared during the 1960s. It was designed by Ernie Unger and Val Dare-Bryan, incorporating their considerable competition experience. It was drawn by Ron Bradshaw who drew also the Ford GT40. The car is today much sought after and very rare.
